For Buddhist, where you end up after life all depends on what you've done while you were alive. It's like eye for an eye type of deal. There are total of 18 levels and the further you end up in the worse punishment you'll get. Scared the shit out of me when I was little. Still makes perfect sense to me.

Thanks for posting the paintings. In particular noticed the one of the Bodhisattva of Compassion/Goddess of Mercy Kuan Yin alleviating the suffering of sinners in Hell. Was interesting that Her acolytes Shan Tsai and Lung Nu accompanied Her which could indicate that this is an expedition to Hell subsequent to the first one after Her execution by Her father.
The final painting reminded me of the fate of the Lustful in Dante's Inferno with the addition of what almost resembles the red Fudo Myoo or possibly Aizen Myoo.
It would be nice to see descriptions for each painting. I would like to know what kind of sins one must have commited to deserve such punishment.
Do you know the history of these paintings?
